Hello and welcome, my name is Derek Trott and I will be your admissions counselor! I’m pleased that Washington College has been included in your college search.

Washington College has a tradition of excellence, extending over 225 years. Founded in 1782 by the Reverend Dr. William Smith, Washington College became the first college chartered in the new nation. The college was founded with the principle idea to educate members of society, to further facilitate the growth of democracy in the new nation. Today the legacy of Washington himself remains through the embodiment that is the community of Washington College.

Here at Washington College we aim to facilitate growth of the individual. Through one of our 42 majors, minors, and concentrations we build the academic value of the student. With a student to faculty ratio of 12 to 1, the personal relationship with the professor is easily built. The community of Washington College, approximately 1300 students, participates in a wide range of varsity athletics, clubs, internships, and much more. A high percentage of students receive either need-based financial aid, or merit-based scholarships, or both!

As a Washington College alumnus, I believe that the experience obtained from a liberal arts education is like none other. I got to know many professors on a first name basis, engaged in discussion on upcoming research with upperclassmen, and learned so much from my friends in regards to other majors. In my first year at Washington College, I joined the crew team and Kappa Alpha, one of the campus fraternities. I later became a peer mentor, a tour guide, a student athlete mentor (SAM), captain of my crew team, as well as a writer for The Elm, our campus newspaper.

I also learned that if you change your major at the "last minute," it is possible to still graduate on time. I came with the ideals of a pre-med student, and switched to clinical psychology before my junior year. If you are undecided as to what major you wish to explore, don’t worry. One of the many great benefits of a liberal arts education is you get to explore all majors.

Washington College not only built me as a student, but as an individual.

If you are curious as to if Washington College is the right fit for you, come visit us. If you have any questions as to the admissions process or I can be of assistance in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.
