We at Washington College value our transfer students for the depth of experience they bring to our campus.
Each year, transfer students attending 2- and 4-year institutions from across the country and overseas apply to Washington College. Students who ultimately decide to transfer to Washington College are comfortable in the knowledge that they are joining a community dedicated to the liberal arts tradition, and invested in their continued growth as leaders and scholars.

Q. Is it necessary to submit my High School grades?
A: Yes. Depending on your college experience, a high school transcript may or may not be a deciding factor for admission. Your final high school transcript is required for matriculation regardless.
Q. Do I need to submit ACT/SAT test scores?
A: If you have completed less than two semesters of coursework at your current institution, SAT/ACT test scores are required. Test scores may be waived under special circumstances.
Q. Can I apply on-line?
A: Yes. A general application can be downloaded, or visit the common application web site at www.commonapp.org.
Q. What is the minimum post secondary GPA recommended for admission?
A: A minimum GPA of 2.5 is recommended for transfer admission. Applicants with less than a 2.5 GPA are strongly encouraged to schedule a personal interview.
Q. Is an interview required?

Q. Can I apply for either Fall or Spring term?
A: Yes. Washington College accepts approximately 70 transfer applications for the Fall term and 30 applications for the Spring term. Transfer admissions are determined on a "rolling" basis. There is no set deadline for transfer applications.
Q. Are scholarships available for transfer students?
A: Yes. Students who are members of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society are eligible for an annual scholarship in the amount of $10,000-$15,000 per year. Other merit-based scholarships are available for high achieving students that are not in Phi Theta Kappa. International transfer students are also eligible for merit-based scholarships in the range of $5000-$15,000 annually.
Q. Will I have to live on campus?
A: No. Although many transfer students elect to live on campus, it is not required. The surrounding community offers many rental opportunities.
Q. How many credits are needed to graduate from Washington College?
A: Transfer students must complete 126 to 128 credit hours. A minimum of 56 credit hours must be completed at Washington College in order to graduate. (Washington College is on a course system. Most Washington College courses equal 4 credit hours.)
Q. What is the minimum "passing" grade for a course to transfer to Washington College?
A: A minimum of a C grade must be achieved for a course to transfer.
Q. Will grades from my transfer institution be used in calculating my Washington College GPA?
A: No. Your Washington College GPA will be based only on your Washington College courses.
Q. Will I get credit for AP tests?
A: Yes. In most cases, credit will be awarded for AP scores of 4 or 5.
Q. If I have my A. A. degree, do I "automatically" enter as a junior at Washington College?
A: Washington College has agreements with a number of Maryland community colleges that make junior status "automatic"; however, most students who transfer must have at least 64 transferable credits to be considered a junior.
Q. What is the maximum number of credits that I can transfer?
A: The maximum number of credits that will transfer is 72 from either a two or four-year institution.
Q. If my current institution awards three credits for non-lab courses and Washington College awards four credits per course, will I get four credits for my transfer courses?
A: No. Washington College offers course parity, but not credit parity for transfered coursework.
Q. How do I find out how many credits will transfer?
A: All admitted applicants receive a preliminary credit review of their transcripts within 2-3 weeks of the admission decision. An official review of the final transcript is performed by the registrar's office prior to entering Washington College. Students transferring to Washington College from a Maryland institution may review their transfer credits through the University of Maryland ArtSys program on the internet at artweb.usmd.edu.
Q. Are there General Education requirements for transfer students?
A: Yes. However, many students will transfer in some of the necessary courses. Transfer students with 64 transferable credits are exempt from the freshman and sophomore writing seminars. All students who graduate from Washington College must complete the senior obligation in their major field.
Q. My current institution has a physical education requirement, will those credits transfer?
A: Possibly. Depending on the nature of the course, Washington College can accept up to 4 units of physical education coursework. Credit for athletic participation is not transferable.
